Craftsmanship is about high skills and supreme quality. The dedication of goldsmiths throughout the centuries has produced exquisite pieces of work admired by connoisseurs all over the world. In 1984 four qualified teachers at the Sir John Cass School of Jewellery (now part of the London Guildhall University) came together to form the Institute of Professional Goldsmiths. They felt that there had to be a standard introduced to maintain the high level of craftsmanship and develop the objective of training and create good practices.

The four craftsmen in question were Michael Page, Len Wilcox, Sidney Wickham and Ralph Hollingdale. They felt that there should be a distinction between the new degree based training schemes which had become popular but didn't have the basis of the more traditional apprenticeship method of training.
